Last evening we donned our kaftans and turbans, mounted our camels and ventured out into the Sahara Desert! After an exhilarating (but painful) forty-five minute ride we dismounted and scrambled up to the top of the highest dune to sit and await the sunset. And we were not disappointed – a spectacular scene as the sun seemed to hang there and then suddenly disappear behind the distant mountains. It was as if we were the only people on Earth – so peaceful, so quiet, so starkly beautiful. Then a scramble back down the dune (with an unfair advantage to the women; they were dragged down, on their bottoms, by the camel-handlers pulling them by the ankles), back on our camels and a leisurely ride under the full moon back to our Kasbah. We finished a memorable day with a delicious meal of lamb and vegetable tajine, with couscous and side dishes of condiments in the open courtyard. Bliss!!!
