Last night we walked down to the Essaouira port to capture the magical sunset, then back to the Taros Restaurant for another delicious meal of seafood pastille and duck confit, and another encounter with the magician. This time, although we were again dazzled with his magic, we did not lose any personal belongings and Elizabeth gained a photograph with him. This morning we left this beautiful seaside town to head back inland to Marrakesh, a three-hour drive away. We picked up some lunch ingredients on the way and on our arrival at our riad we had a picnic lunch on the roof terrace.
Then off to explore this vast, energetic town – straight to the medina, where we watched the snake-charmers and John plucked up the courage to wear a snake around his neck, then into the souks to be invited to purchase everything from clothing to jewellery to spices to souvenirs, all the while dodging motor bikes, bicycles, mules and carts and even the odd car in pedestrian only alleys. We stopped at a spice shop where the shopkeeper showed off his chameleons before selling us some saffron and spice mix. Then the long walk back to our hotel for a quick dip in the tiny roof-top pool and catching up on our washing. Tonight we will have a quiet meal on the terrace.
Tomorrow: Out on foot to visit the Saadian tombs, the Bahia Palace and the Museum of Photography, then tomorrow night our last dinner in Morocco (sob).
